We interviewed Bunga Amalia Kurniawati, who joined Money Forward in 2021 and currently works in Money Forward X Company as a software engineer.

My interest in programming started when I wanted to make my own video games

I was born in Indonesia in a small town near Jakarta called Depok.
The university I attended and the company I worked for for a bit after graduation were both located in Depok, so I lived in this city all my life until I came to Japan in 2022.

I loved to play games since I was a kid, but my first interest in programming came when I was in junior high school and I wanted to make my own video games. I thought it wouldn't be that difficult (but I was so wrong lol).

So I started to learn a bit about programming on my own, it was hard but so much fun. My father is a telecommunication engineer and he taught me how to think logically about a lot of our daily problems. That was really cool, and I remember thinking that I wanted to be like that.

It turned out that in my high school there was an extracurricular class called "Student Club" to participate in the National Science Olympiad in Indonesia. I managed to pass the exam to join that class and learned programming, number theory, logical statement, probability, and basic algorithms but in, the end, I did not win the Olympics.
I was also involved in student council at the time, so I wasn't able to focus on preparing for the Olympics. But I think I learned a lot from that.

When I thought about my major in college, I couldn't imagine any other department than Computer Science. It was because I only like mathematics, and also computers only know true or false, so they are clear and unambiguous. I was a bit of an introvert at that time, so I felt very comfortable interacting with computers.

The closest university to my home that has a Computer Science department is the University of Indonesia, which is known for being difficult to gain admission. Thankfully, I got accepted there, and I believe that God showed me the way to my goals.

A dream of going to Japan. It almost disappeared once because of COVID-19

When I was in high school, I had the chance to go on a one-week exchange program. I went to Fukuoka and Tokyo, Japan.
That was my first experience abroad.

Ever since I was a child, I was interested in Japanese anime, J-pop, and Japanese food, and Japanese traditional culture like kimono is very beautiful.
Besides, there are many tourist attractions in Japan, and unlike Indonesia, which has only dry and rainy seasons, Japan has four seasons. So living in Japan became my biggest dream.

In my university days, I studied a lot about computer science topics such as discrete mathematics, operating systems, databases, data structure and algorithms, software engineering, and so on.
To be honest, it was really hard. I cried a lot while doing my assignments and during the exam season lol.

Outside of the classroom, I worked as a teaching assistant in the university's web design and programming course, interned as a software engineer at some Indonesian start-up companies, participated in competitive programming and hackathons, and helped start a Google Developer Student Club, a community supported by Google Developers at the University of Indonesia.

Finally, in 2020, I got a chance to do a six-month exchange program at Hitotsubashi University.
But just a week before I was to leave, COVID-19 started and the exchange program was canceled.
I was very disappointed and very depressed for a while, because I had taken a leave of absence from the university and turned down an internship offer to prepare for it.
For about 1.5 years, my hometown had a non-strict lockdown and I decided to stay at home.
For a while, the city was closed and I was stuck at home, often crying about the situation.

To fill up my free time, I opened a small home business called "Gyudonesia (Gyu-don + Indonesia)", I made gyu-don (Japanese thinly-sliced beef stew with rice) but with Indonesian flavors like Se'i and Rendang. I started selling it online and delivering it using Gojek/Grab Bike. I did everything by myself, from cooking, designing, marketing, to social networking and this business was doing well, but it became too much work and I had to quit after 3 months.

Then I went back to college and took classes online and got a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science.

In my job search, I applied to companies not only in Japan but also in Singapore, Taiwan, and the U.S., but was unable to receive any job offers.
Because of COVID-19, there were not many companies that offered visas or support for immigration.
With this COVID disaster, I gave up on the idea that it was possible to work for an overseas company, and found a job with an Indonesian company.

An Unexpected Chance to Work in Japan

Then one day, on Linkedin, Komaki-san, an engineering manager at Money Forward, sent me a connection request.

In my last year of college, I had participated in a programming competition called IYCL (Indonesia Young Coders League) 2021, organized by Mekari and Money Forward, so I knew about Money Forward, and a few of my friends had internships there.

Everyone said that working at Money Forward was fun and the people working there were friendly, and Money Forward's vision and mission matched my interest in fintech.
So I took a chance and asked Komaki-san, "Do you have a team that can communicate in English?" The timing was really great because he just started to build a global engineering team that wouldn’t require any Japanese skills and there were some openings for new graduates.

After that, we started the application and interview process which went smoothly, and thank God, I got the job offer. Finally, I had a chance to work in Japan!

Due to various events up to that point, I thought that my dream of working in Japan would not come true anytime soon. However, God showed me the way, and with the love, support, and prayers from my loved ones, I finally had the opportunity to work in Japan.

Because of COVID-19, I couldn't enter Japan right away, so I worked remotely in Indonesia for a while, and then I was able to come to Japan in April 2022.

There are many talented software engineers in the world, and I wanted to improve my English skills, so I had always wanted to leave the city where I grew up and work abroad. Having lived in my hometown of Depok for more than 20 years since birth, I wanted to challenge myself in a new environment.
And, I wanted to expand my comfort zone, and wanted more connections with more people.

By working abroad, I can have new experiences and learn many things that I could not do in my hometown.
My parents were very proud that I got the chance to be a software engineer in Japan, but at first, they were a little worried because I had never left my hometown, Depok. So I convinced them by explaining that I had some friends from the same university that were going to Japan too. In the end, they told me to be safe, not to work too hard, and to enjoy my life in Japan.

What "work" means to me and what I want to achieve

I won't lie that for me "work" literally means to be paid to do something for someone else. It’s one of the ways to survive and live comfortably in life. But besides that, I’m also trying to contribute to society and fill up my life with activities that could bring happiness to me and my environment. Working at Money Forward as a software engineer is aligned with that because I can build something with code and my knowledge, while supporting the company’s mission to “Move your life forward”. Thankfully, I just received the company-wide award called the "Culture Hero* of Fun", I think it’s because I'm trying to enjoy my work, growth, and life to the fullest.
*The "Culture Hero" is part of a program to recognize those who embody Money Forward's five cultures: Speed, Pride, Teamwork, Respect, and Fun.

Moreover, I’m the first Muslim female member in Money Forward. At first, I was worried if Muslims would be accepted here. We have five prayer times a day and we can only eat halal or Muslim-friendly foods. But the company created a prayer room and always have halal, vegan, and vegetarian items at company events or parties. I am very grateful and touched that Money Forward is really thoughtful and considerate about everyone.

As we know, there are very few female engineers right now. In my university, the faculty of Computer Science only had about 20% of women students when I was there. Being a female, an engineer, and a Muslim, although these factors make me a minority, they are not barriers for me to express myself. I believe that my contribution to the company as a Muslim female engineer will help break down stereotypes and support the globalization, diversity, and inclusion of the company. One of my goals is to create a work environment where everyone can work comfortably regardless of our religions, ages, genders, races, nationalities, and backgrounds.

After working as a software engineer for a few years, I would like to become an engineering manager to support other engineers and create a larger impact. Also, this is a wild dream but I hope to be able to establish a Money Forward branch office in Indonesia. We already have branches in India and Vietnam, so I feel like I can make it happen someday!

「私にとっての『働く』とは」AmaさんのSTORY

「あなたにとって『働く』とは？」をテーマに、マネーフォワードのメンバーの人生を紐解くSTORY。

2021年にマネーフォワードに入社し、現在はマネーフォワードXカンパニーでエンジニアとして活躍するAmaさんにお話しを聞きました。

インドネシア大学 情報工学科を卒業後、インドネシアのフィンテックカンパニー勤務を経てマネーフォワードにジョイン。2019年、大学在学中にMicrosoft社主催のハッカソンにおいて、チームで2位を受賞するなど、学生時代からのさまざまな経験をバックグラウンドに、現在はマネーフォワードXカンパニーにてソフトウェアエンジニアとして活躍中。藤井風とピカチュウに夢中♡

プログラミングに興味をもったきっかけは、自分でゲームを作ってみたいと思ったことだった

私はインドネシアのDepokというジャカルタの近くの小さな街で生まれました。
私の通っていた大学も、卒業後に少し働いていた会社もDepokにあったので、2022年に日本に来るまでずっとこの街で暮らしていたんです。

子供の頃からゲームが好きだったんですが、中学生の頃「自分でゲームを作ってみたい」と思ったのがプログラミングに興味を持った最初のきっかけでした。
ゲームを作るのはそんなに難しいことじゃないだろう、と思ったんです（でもその考えは間違っていました・笑）

そこから自分でプログラミングを少しづつ学び始めました。私の父は、通信工学のエンジニアで、日常のさまざまな問題について、論理的に考える方法を教えてくれたんです。それがすごくかっこよくて、自分も父のようになりたい、と思ったことを覚えています。

高校に進学して、インドネシアの国立科学オリンピックに参加するための「ステューデントクラブ」という課外授業があることを知りました。そのクラスに参加するための試験に何とか合格し、プログラミングや数論、データ構造のアルゴリズムなどを学んだものの、結局オリンピックでは優勝できなかったんです。
当時生徒会にも参加していたので、オリンピックへの準備に集中できなかったのが原因ですね。でも、そこから多くを学ぶことができたと思っています。

大学の専攻を考えたときに、情報工学以外の学部は考えられませんでした。
私は数学しか好きな科目がなかったことと、コンピューターの世界というのは、白黒が明確で、曖昧なところがないことに魅力を感じていたからです。
当時の私は内向的な性格だったので、コンピューターと向き合う時間に心地よさを感じていました。

私の家から一番近い大学で、情報工学の学科があるのは、入学が難しいことで知られているインドネシア大学でした。ありがたいことに、無事合格することができました。
神様が私の目標に、道筋を示して下さったんだと思います。

コロナで一度は消えかけた、憧れの日本に行く夢

高校生のときに、1週間だけ、日本の福岡と東京に交換留学するチャンスがありました。
それが初めての海外体験です。

子どもの頃から、日本のアニメやJ-POP、日本の食べ物に興味があったし、着物のような日本の伝統文化はとても美しい。
それに、日本にはたくさんの観光地があるし、乾季と雨季だけのインドネシアと違って、四季もある。だから日本に住むことは、私の一番大きな夢になったんです。

大学では、離散数学、オペレーティングシステム、データベース、データ構造とアルゴリズム、ソフトウェア工学など、情報工学に関するさまざまなことを学びました。
正直、本当に大変で、課題をこなしながら泣きながら試験に挑んでいたんです（笑）

授業以外でも、大学のWEBデザインとプログラミングのコースでティーチングアシスタントをしたり、企業でソフトウェアエンジニアとしてインターンをしたり、競技プログラミングや、ハッカソンにも参加し、インドネシア大学のGoogleデベロッパーがサポートするGoogle Developer Student Clubの立ち上げにも貢献し、とても充実した毎日でした。

そして、2020年についに、一橋大学への半年間の交換留学のチャンスを得たんです。
でも、ちょうど出発する1週間前にコロナが始まってしまい、そのチャンスは流れてしまいました。
大学を休学をし、インターンシップのオファーも断って準備をしていたので、とても残念で、しばらくの間、とても落ち込みました。
一年半ほど、私の地元ではゆるやかな封鎖が行われることになり、私は家に引きこもることにしたんです。そんな状況に、泣いてばかりいました。

その時間を埋めるために、インドネシア風の味付けをした牛丼「Gyudonesia（牛丼＋インドネシア）」を作り、Gojekという配達サービスを使って販売するちいさなビジネスを立ち上げました。
調理からデザイン、マーケティング、SNSまで全て自分でやり、好調ではあったんですが、あまりの大変さに3ヶ月でやめてしまいました（笑）

その後大学に戻ってオンラインで授業を受け、情報工学の学士号を取得しました。

就職活動では、日本だけではなく、シンガポールや台湾、アメリカの会社にも応募しましたが、内定をもらうことができませんでした。
コロナの影響もあって、ビザや、移住のサポートが受けられる会社が少なかったんです。
このコロナ禍で、海外の会社で働くのは無理だ、と諦めてインドネシアの企業に就職しました。

思いがけず手にした、日本で働くチャンス

そんなある日、Linkedinで、マネーフォワードのエンジニアマネージャーである小牧さんが、私のつながりリクエストに反応してくれました。

大学時代の最後の年に、ふとしたきっかけで、メカリとマネーフォワードが主催するIYCL（Indonesia Young Corders League）2021というプログラミング競技に参加していたので、マネーフォワードのことは知っていたのと、友達が数人マネーフォワードでインターンシップをしていたので、興味を持っていたんです。

皆、マネーフォワードでの仕事は楽しいし、働いている人もフレンドリーだよ、と話していたし、それに、マネーフォワードのビジョンやミッションも、私のフィンテックテクノロジーへの興味と合致していました。
だから、思い切って小牧さんに、「英語でコミュニケーションができるチームはありますか？」と聞いてみたら、ちょうど、日本語のスキルを必要としないグローバルなエンジニアチームをつくり始めたところで、新卒の募集もしている、と返答をもらったんです。

その後、応募をし、面接が始まりましたが、スムーズに進み、内定をいただくことができました。ようやく、日本で働くチャンスが巡ってきたんです！

それまでの色々な出来事から、日本で働く夢はすぐに叶わないだろう、と思っていました。でも、神様がちゃんと道を示してくださり、愛する人たちの想いやサポートそして祈りもあって、やっと日本で働く機会を得ることができたんです。

コロナの影響で、すぐには日本に入国できず、一旦はインドネシアでリモートで仕事をし、2022年の4月に日本に入国することができました。

世界にはたくさんの優秀なソフトウェアエンジニアがいるし、英語力ももっと高めたいと思っていたので、ずっと育った街を出て海外で働いてみたい、という気持ちはあったんです。故郷のDepokに生まれてから20年以上も住んでいたので、新しい環境でチャレンジをしたいと考えてきました。
自分のコンフォートゾーンを広げたかったし、もっともっといろんな人とコネクションが欲しかったんです。
海外に出て働くことで、地元ではできないさまざまなことを経験し、学ぶことができますよね。

両親は、私が日本でソフトウェアエンジニアになるチャンスを得たことを、とても誇りに思ってくれましたが、私は故郷のデポックから出たことがなかったので、最初は少し心配していました。
なので私は、同じ大学の友人たちが日本に一緒に行くことを説明し、両親を説得したんです。最終的には「安全第一で、頑張りすぎないで、日本での生活を楽しんでね」と言ってもらえました。

私にとっての「働く」ということ、そして実現したいこと

私にとって「働く」ということは、誤解を恐れずに言うと「誰かのために何かをすることで、お金をもらうこと」です。それは、生きていくために必要な手段のひとつであり、また快適に生活するための手段でもあります。
しかし、それだけではなく、社会に貢献し、自分と自分をとりまく環境を幸せにできるような活動で、自分の人生を満たしたい、と思っています。
マネーフォワードでソフトウェアエンジニアとして働くことで「お金を前へ。人生をもっと前へ。」という会社のミッションをサポートしながら、コードと知識を生かしてサービスやプロダクトに貢献できます。

ありがたいことに「カルチャーヒーロー」*の「Fun」をいただいたばかりですが、これは仕事も成長も人生も、全力で楽しもう、と思っているからだと思います。
※「カルチャーヒーロー」は、マネーフォワードの5つのカルチャー：Speed、Pride、Teamwork、Respect、Funを体現して働いている人を表彰する制度の一つ

それに、私はマネーフォワードで初めてのイスラム教徒の女性社員です。はじめは、イスラム教徒が受け入れられるのか、不安でした。私たちは1日に5回、祈りの時間があり、またハラルフードやムスリムフレンドリーなものしか食べられません。
でも、会社は私たちのために「Prayer Room（祈りのための部屋）」を作り、そして、会社のイベントやパーティでは必ず、ハラルやヴィーガン、ベジタリアン向けのメニューも用意してくれています。

マネーフォワードは、働くメンバー全員のことを考え、配慮をしてくれるんだな、と思うと、とてもありがたいし、なによりそれに感動を覚えました。

ご存知の通り、女性エンジニアは非常に少ないのが現状です。
私の大学でも、在籍当時、情報工学部には女子学生が20%しかいませんでした。
女性であること、エンジニアであること、そしてムスリムであること。これらの要素はマイノリティと呼ばれるものではありますが、それが私が自分を表現するための障壁にはなりません。

イスラム教徒の女性エンジニアである私が、会社に貢献することで、固定概念を打ち破り、会社のグローバル化とDEI（Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion）の推進をサポートできると考えています。
宗教や年齢、性別、人種、国籍、といったバックグラウンドに関係なく、誰もが快適に働くことができる職場環境を作ることが、私の目標の一つです。

ソフトウェアエンジニアとして何年か働いたのちに、エンジニアリングマネージャーとなり、他のエンジニアをサポートすることで、より大きな影響を与えたいと思っています。
また、これは非常に大きな夢ではありますが、インドネシアにマネーフォワードの支社を設立できたら素敵だなと思います。すでにインドとベトナムに支社があるので、いつか実現できる気がしています！
