Encountering a Japanese company in India. My interest in Japan grew and I decided to move to Japan five years ago.

I am from Pune in western India. When I graduated, I joined the Indian branch of a major Japanese telecommunications company, but at the time I didn't know much about Japan.

At that company, I learnt Japanese little by little through Japanese language training and through dealing with Japanese clients, and I became interested in Japanese culture. At some point, I began to think that I wanted to work in Japan, but opportunities were hard to come by through internal transfers, so I decided to take the plunge and change jobs. I successfully found a job in Japan and moved to Japan five years ago.

In Japan, I was involved in the development of in-house web application tools at an automobile company and mobile app back-end API development at a convenience store chain. At both companies, all communication was in Japanese, so I improved my Japanese while working there. I think it was thanks to my experiences at these two companies that I was able to pass the JLPT N2.

From there, I decided that I wanted to work for a company where I could utilize my English and Japanese language skills and grow more as an engineer, so I changed jobs to Money Forward one year ago.

At the interview, I heard that Money Forward was beginning to gather members from various countries and that the engineering organization would be English-speaking by 2024. I sympathized with these globalization efforts and wanted to contribute to that.

I am happy to be able to support our members with my own experiences of struggling to move abroad.

When I first joined the company, I belonged to a team called “Team Nikko”, which was the first team in the entire company to convert communication within the team to English. At the time, there were about 10 members, most of whom were non-Japanese and some of whom were new to Japan. I was bilingual and used to life in Japan, so I was able to contribute to the team in many situations.

Money Forward already has many systems and programs to support Non-Japanese members. For example, when I first came to Japan, I had to do everything by myself, such as applying for a visa, finding a place to live, opening a bank account and signing a mobile phone contract, which was very difficult. But with Money Forward, the company provides a lot of support for these procedures and so on.

So I would like to support members who are moving abroad for the first time in more detailed areas. For example, I can show them how to get the train, take phone calls in Japanese when English is not enough (such as with internet contracts), and introduce them to shops where they can get Indian food and good Indian restaurants, if they are also from India.

It is very rewarding to share my experiences and knowledge about work and life in Japan. I often tell them, "I think of you all as my brothers and sisters, so don't hesitate to contact me if you have any problems."

I understand the difficulties and anxieties of moving to Japan from abroad myself, so it makes me very happy to see members who have also come from abroad adjusting to working and living in Japan with ease.

I want to take development and globalization further forward with my help

I am currently in charge of API development for "Money Forward Cloud Accounting". As a group leader, I am also responsible for deciding the development roadmap, mentoring junior members and reviewing them.

As this team has many non-Japanese members, supporting communication with other teams is also an important part of my role.

For example, many members of the Quality Assurance (QA) team, with whom we often collaborate, are better at Japanese, so I communicate with them in Japanese first. I check progress and decisions, and then share them with my team in English.

Continuing from when I was a member of Team Nikko, recruitment interviews for Non-Japanese members are also an important part of my job. As a member from overseas, I tell them how I work at MoneyForward and how I perceive Money Forward.

I feel that I am able to utilize my English and Japanese skills as a bilingual engineer, exactly as I had hoped before joining the company.

Money Forward already has the feel of a global company rather than a Japanese company. We have also established the Global People Partners team to provide translation and interpretation support, which has been very helpful. I think this kind of company culture is very important for the ease of work. I am happy that I have contributed to creating this culture.

I want to tell female engineers working around the world more about Money Forward.

I would like to take on the challenge of working to increase the number of opportunities for female engineers globally.

While working at Money Forward and conducting recruitment interviews, I felt that there are fewer female engineers than male ones. Perhaps the number of female engineers in Japan is small to begin with, but in the case of Money Forward, I think this easy-to-work-in environment is not being communicated.

For example, many Money Forward employees have taken childcare leave, and an English version of the Parental Leave Guidebook has been prepared. There are also many people who use remote work and flexibly adjust their working hours to accommodate nursery school pick-ups. Many people are concerned about whether a company is a good place to work while raising children.

So I want to tell women engineers globally how women work at Money Forward, how they balance life events and what support is available to them. I'm looking into what kind of places are good, such as women's tech events, and through interviews with the women at Money Forward, I'd be happy if the people who attend think it's a good company.

I would like to continue to participate in various opportunities whenever I get the chance and drive the creation of a diverse organization at Money Forward.
