From Indonesia to Japan; what I wanted since my student days, living abroad

I am from Greater Jakarta, Indonesia. I studied information engineering at the University of Indonesia and came to Japan when I joined Money Forward as a new graduate.

When I was looking for a job, my main wish was to work overseas. My older sister influenced me because she went on to get a Master’s degree in the US, so from my student days, I had wanted to go abroad and experience the world.  

I didn't have a clear destination country in mind, but I had become interested in Japan through manga, anime, video games, and J-POP, and I had also acquired basic Japanese language skills through self-study, so Japan was one of my main candidates. Luckily, I came across Money Forward through an introduction from an employment agency, and after seeing the business, MVVC (Mission, Vision, Value, Culture), and things that CEO Tsuji-san had to say, I decided to join the company because I was sure it would be a good place for me.

I had been abroad on vacation before, but I had never been to Japan. So I felt nervous right  from the time I decided to find a job until I actually arrived. My family also seemed to be surprised that I would find a job in Japan, bombarding me with questions like, "What kind of company is it?” “Will you be ok on your own?” etc. (lol).

Feeling the true significance of Money Forward’s business after joining

Once I actually joined the company, I was relieved to find that the atmosphere was exactly as I had imagined it would be. It was very much a venture enterprise environment. Of course, I had done a lot of research on the company during the selection process, but you never know if what is being communicated will be reflected in the actual situation until you get there. Since there I knew some people who already worked there who had come from my university, I was able to consult with them on various matters, which made me feel at ease.

After joining the company, I was reminded that Money Forward is working on its business with great intention and significance, and that they communicate this to each and every one of their members. When I read Money Forward's prospectus* that was shared within the company, I was very moved, and I knew that I had made the right decision in deciding to take on the challenge of working here.

The Soukai All-Hands (the Money Forward Group's semi-annual general meeting) is also a great opportunity to review the entire company and learn where it is headed in the future. For me, knowing what’s behind the company's thinking and having a sense of conviction is very important when working, so I think this kind of place suits me.

*This letter of intent was drafted by Yosuke Tsuji, CEO of Money Forward, in 2011 to express his thoughts on the launch of the business. It is the same content that leads to our current Mission and Vision, and Money Forward was established by a group of members who shared this letter of intent.

Happy to encounter new knowledge and to experience growth 

Right now, as an engineer in the Account Aggregation Department, I am maintaining and creating various data aggregation services using Scraper and API endpoints. Communication in the team is mostly in English for Slack and meetings, and Japanese for everyday conversations. We are comfortable asking questions and consulting with those around us, and we also utilize Gather, our virtual office, to communicate with each other.

The work of Account Aggregation doesn’t involve creating any products on its own, but it’s a team that is responsible for the structure that supports many of Money Forward's products.

In this context, what I find most rewarding is the ability to continue to grow as I gain more knowledge. For example, besides the technical aspects, it is also interesting to learn about the respective roles and mechanisms of financial institutions such as banks and securities companies.

Comparing who I was six months ago to who I am now, my knowledge and what I am capable of has definitely increased, and this sense of growth is the most rewarding thing for me. I still have to work hard at my current job, but someday I would like to be involved in the development of products such as "Money Forward ME" and "Money Forward Cloud", and learn how account aggregation is actually being utilized.

Of course, there are times when I wonder if I am doing my job well and if my current capabilities are sufficient. I try to have proper 1on1 discussions about such things with my manager.

One Year in Japan; getting used to living in a different culture, enjoying connections with diverse people

I am a Muslim, so when I first came to Japan, I often asked my friends for advice on how to find halal foods and other problems I had in my daily life. Now that I am able to read food ingredient labels and know which food stores carry halal items, I have fewer issues like this.

The Money Forward headquarters office has a prayer room, and I have time to pray three times during the work day. During Ramadan this year, an HR person interviewed Muslim members, including myself, about how we spend Ramadan and shared it with the rest of the company.

At a recruiting event for Indonesian students, I also introduced what it’s like at Money Forward with an office tour video.

I often travel around Japan with other Non-Japanese members of Money Forward. When we all went to Niseko in Hokkaido, I tried skiing for the first time. I also have fond memories of our trips to Osaka and Kyoto.

There are many other events within the company where members interact with each other, and there are many opportunities to meet new people. I actively participate in these events, and I believe that this kind of atmosphere and these initiatives make it possible for everyone to be excited about working even though we have a diverse group of members from all over the world.

If there are people like me from Indonesia or other countries who want to work for Money Forward in Japan, I would like them to first think carefully about whether they really want to come here, as there are many difficulties in preparation and living in Japan after arriving. After thinking deeply, if you choose to challenge yourself overseas, I can confidently recommend Money Forward.

学生時代から望んでいた海外での生活。インドネシアから日本へ

私はインドネシアのグレーター・ジャカルタ出身です。インドネシア大学で情報工学を学び、マネーフォワードへの新卒入社を機に、日本に来ました。

就職活動では「海外で働きたい」というのが一番の希望でした。アメリカでMaster Degree（大学院修士課程）に進んだ姉の影響もあり、学生時代から海外に行って色々な経験をしたいと考えていたんです。

行き先の国は明確に絞っていなかったんですが、漫画やアニメ、ゲーム、J-POPから日本に興味を持つようになって、独学で基本的な日本語力も習得していたので、日本も候補のひとつでした。幸運にも、就職エージェントからの紹介でマネーフォワードに出会い、事業やMVVC（Mission、Vision、Value、Culture）、CEOの辻さんの発信などを見て、きっと良い会社だと思って入社を決めました。

旅行で海外に行ったことはあったんですが、日本には行ったことがありませんでした。だから、就職を決めてから実際に日本にくるまではずっと緊張気味でした。家族も、私が日本で就職するのは意外だったみたいで「どんな会社なの？」「生活は大丈夫なの？」と質問攻めにあってしまいました（笑）

入社してからより感じたマネーフォワードの事業の意義

実際に入社してみると、入社前に想像していた通りの雰囲気で安心しました。まさに、ベンチャー企業という感じですね。もちろん、選考中に会社のことはよく調べていたんですが、発信している内容と実態が同じなのかは、行ってみないとわからないですから。ひとつ上の年や、同期に同じ大学出身のメンバーがいたので、いろいろと相談できて安心しました。

入社して改めて感じたのは、マネーフォワードがすごく意思と意義を持って事業に取り組んでいるということと、それをメンバーひとり一人にしっかりと伝えてくれているということ。社内で共有されているマネーフォワードの設立趣意書※を読んだ時はすごく感動して、この会社で挑戦することを決めたのは間違いではなかったと思いました。

Soukai All Hands（マネーフォワードグループの半期総会）でも、全社の振り返りやこれからどこへ向かっていくのかを知ることができます。私にとって、会社の考えを知ってそこに納得感をもつことは、働くうえですごく大事なので、こういう所は自分に合っていると思います。

※2011年に創業CEO 辻庸介が起草した、事業立ち上げへの想いを綴ったもの。現在のMission、Visionにつながる内容であり、この趣意書に共感したメンバーが集まり、マネーフォワードが設立された。

仕事を通じて新しい知識と出会い、成長を実感できるのがうれしい

今は、アカウントアグリゲーション本部でエンジニアとして、ScraperやAPIエンドポイントを利用した各種データ集計サービスを整備・作成しています。チームでのコミュニケーションは、Slackや会議は英語、普段の会話は日本語が多めです。周りに質問や相談がしやすく、バーチャルオフィスのGatherも活用して、やりとりしています。

アカウントアグリゲーションの仕事は、独自で何かプロダクトを作っているわけではなく、マネーフォワードの多くのプロダクトを支える仕組みを担うチームです。

その中で、私のやりがいは、知識を吸収しながら成長し続けられることです。例えば、技術的なこと以外にも、銀行や証券会社といった金融機関のそれぞれの役割や仕組みを知っていくことも興味深いです。

半年前の自分と今の自分を比べると、知識も出来る事も確実に増えていて、この成長実感が私の一番のやりがいです。まだまだ、今の仕事を頑張らないといけないですが、いつかは『マネーフォワード ME』や『マネーフォワード クラウド』など、プロダクトの開発に携わって、アカウントアグリゲーションが実際にどのように活用されているのかも、知りたいですね。

もちろん、仕事が上手くやれているだろうか、自分の今の力は足りているだろうか、と悩むこともあります。そんな話も、1on1でマネージャーとちゃんとするようにしています。

日本に来て1年。異なる文化での生活にも慣れ、多様なメンバーとの出会いを楽しんでいる

私はムスリム（イスラム教徒）なので、日本に来てすぐの頃は、ハラール食品をどうやって選ぶのかなど日常生活で悩むことも多く、よく友達に相談していました。今は食品成分表示が読めるようになってきたり、ハラールに対応している食品店などもわかってきたので、困ることは少なくなってきました。

マネーフォワードの本社オフィスには、Prayer Room（礼拝室）もありますし、仕事中に３回のお祈りの時間も確保できています。今年のラマダンの時には、人事の人が私も含めたムスリムメンバーにラマダンの過ごし方についてインタビューし、社内に共有してくれるなど、ムスリムメンバーのことを知ろうとしてくれていて、安心して働くことができています。

インドネシアの学生向け採用イベントでは、そんなマネーフォワードの様子をオフィスツアー動画で紹介したりもしました。

会社のNon-Japaneseメンバーとは、よく一緒に日本国内を旅行しています。みんなで北海道のニセコに行った時は、初めてスキーに挑戦しました。大阪・京都に行ったことも思い出に残っていますね。

他にも、社内ではメンバー同士の交流イベントが多くて、新しい人に出会える機会が沢山あります。私も積極的に参加してますが、こういう雰囲気や取り組みがあることで、世界中から多様なメンバーが集まっても、みんな生き生きと働くことができると思います。

もし、私と同じようにインドネシアやその他の国から、日本のマネーフォワードで働きたいと思っている人がいたら、準備や日本に来てからの生活で大変なことも沢山あるので、まずは本気で行きたいのかどうかしっかり考えて欲しいです。その上で、もし海外で挑戦することを選ぶのであれば、マネーフォワードは自信を持っておすすめできます。
